The Absence Of (2023)
‘The Absence Of’ is a piece inspired by the nature of silence. It is in three sections: the first a sonic representation of a tranquil and quiet outward appreciation of nature, the second describing an introspective use of silence, and the last calling attention to the sound of silence.
This piece is meant for three musicians and certain sound effects that may or may not appear on top of the intended soundscape is group-specific.
To Tigerland (2023)
for SATB Choir
This piece adapts a poem written by local poet and educator Professor Wang Gung Wu. The music begins with an atmospheric introduction that starts with the female voices and slowly meanders to a full choir sound. Through this sonic tapestry, the music conjures imagery of a humid Southeast Asian climate, reinforced by the picturesque words of the poem sung by the higher voices. This musical landscape transports the listener to the setting of the poem.
The introductory phrases exhibit a sparse texture, characterized by buzzing intervals and non-functional harmonies. As the piece progresses, a gradual transformation takes place, shifting towards a more robust chordal texture adorned with functional harmonies. Within this development, modal exchanges emerge as the music arrives at the final verse. Throughout these musical metamorphoses, the melodies weave a tapestry of fluid and intricate lines, embracing a through-composed style that float on top of the changing harmonies.
Ultimately, the music concludes in a pensive and contemplative ambiance reminiscent of the introspective nature of the opening, creating a sense of musical symmetry and conclusion to the journey undertaken through the piece.
